March 29th, 2007

Me on the Amsterdam Sim

In the largest single sim deal in SL history, owners of the beautifully decorated Amsterdam sim sold the whole thing on e-bay to an anonymous resident of the real Amsterdam for $50,000 real US, which is €37,500 or 13,750,000 Lindens.

More details in the Reuters story.

Cool Second Life Videos

March 19th, 2007

Here is a cool thought provoking from a fellow person trapped in the Metaverse

Here is a funny one saying similar things

This one, which I’m not entirely sure I understand, is fascinating in that it is a fully rendered 3D animated “cartoon” done in Second Life.

The Sexiest Dances in Second Life

March 13th, 2007

Most social dance clubs have their own dance box that you can click on and dance the night away, but most people know that if you want to stand out of the crowd, you should get your own dance chimera and buy your own dances.

The problem of course is that dances are not cheap, about L200 on average and trying to find the best means you are likely to spend money on some lame ones along the way.

I know this, because I set out on a project, to fill a dance chimera with the sexiest dances I could find. Believe me, when I wear this chimera at a dance club, I always turn heads. I’m still searching, but here are the best sexy dances I have found so far, and where to find them.

First stop, Abranimations, and if you are going to go there, you may as well go to the main headquarters on Devils Moon, because it is one of the coolest looking builds in all of SL. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Devils%20Moon/182/126/250/?title=Abranimations

Here is where you can buy a dance chimera, that is better and less than half the cost of the one at Owenimations. Also get the following sexy and seductive dances:

sexy twirl
sexy tease
seductive sway
seductive twirl

You are now at a good start. Next Stop Animations by Jesse Murdock of Bad Girls fame.
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Apukohai/129/60/71/

This place specializes in sexy pose balls, and also partner dances, but in the back they have some single person dances. Jesse has the best Salsa dances, and Salsa dances = always sexy. There are 25 at his store, which is a bit of an overkill unless you want nothing but salsa, but 1 or 2 adds some variety to your dance list. Anyways, my sexy dance shopping list:

Salsa2_jm
Salsa4_jm
eroticdance12b

Owenimations is the most popular animated dance store in SL, but I have no idea why. The dances there are in my opinion overpriced. But there are at least a couple that fit in with the sexy dance theme. Owenimations is all over the place, but here is a link to one http://slurl.com/secondlife/Hiaka/171/174/27/?title=Owenimations Here is my two sexy dances, a lot of people also like Cirque as a sexy dance, but I think it is a bit too showy.

slow sexy spin
daze

Those are the big 3 dance animation stores, but so far all we have are the sexy dances everyone else has. If you really want a sexy edge, you have to dig. The two sexiest dances in all of SL can be found at LostDog which sells al sorts of novelties, and does not specialize in dances. The exact location of the sexiest dances is
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Brauer/41/93/33/?title=LostDog and they are called:

seduction1
seduction2

Next stop Zaius Creations. This store specializes in erotic dances for strip clubs and sex clubs, so most of the animations here are a bit too sexy for casual club dances, but throwing in a couple really livens up your dance routine.
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Whitlock/28/88/92/ The best ones for chimera dancing are:

sexydance6
sexydance8
and if you are really daring, sexydance9

Other assorted sexy dances:

“slinky sexy dance remix” from Anomations
“slow lap dance” a freebie by Mystic Dawn found in “157 free poses and dances” at Yadni’s Junkyard

Well there you have 15 sexy dances ranging from fun loving sexy to erotic sexy. Throw them in a chimera, wear it on your spine (or a little lower so they have to grab your butt to dance) and be the life of the party.

Dating Simulator on Vacation

March 12th, 2007

Ariane's empty house

Well I was forced to shut down the most popular portion of my website, the Dating Simulator. Didn’t really want to, but it was getting too popular. Yesterday, apparently the server crashed, so I decided to take it down.

The start page has all the vital statistics, showing how popular it was and how players did. The most important statistic not shown is 870,000 MB of bandwidth, a few more and the whole website gets shut down permanently. The other problem was page requests. Each click of the mouse could generate 4 page requests, and the server can only handle so many at a time. Hence the large number of service errors lots of players were experiencing. I’m hoping to find inexpensive solutions to both problems and put it back up. No guarantees though.

In the mean time, I have had lots of requests for a zip file of the whole program that people could play on their own computer. After careful consideration I decided, ahh what the hell. http://rapidshare.com/files/20699949/DatingSimulator.zip (41MB)

I know rapidshare is not the most reliable download site, and I am planning mirrors. If anyone wants to bittorent it and post a link in the comments thats fine with me too. Just leave the file as is.

A first look at Playstation 3 Home

March 9th, 2007

At the Gaming Developers Conference this wek, Sony announced their strategy for geting their PS3 out of 4th place (even the PS2 is beating them).

A key component is a new virtual world called PS3 Home. This is an ambitious jump ahead of XBox Live and Nintendo Miis. Read the competitions reaction here.

A key statement:

What about Microsoft’s take? Chris Satchell, general manager of Microsoft’s Game Developer Group, dismissed it to CVG, saying it was "not a very game-centric approach."

"I think they’ve definitely taken some concepts that we originated like achievements, but I think they’re pushing in a different direction and we’ve sort of fundamentally got two different approaches going on here. I think theres is very much a vision that people see it and it looks cool but it’s fundamentally separate from the games – or at least what they’ve shown so far," Satchell continued. "It’s a cool world but it’s like a little game by itself. Our approach is the other way around; it’s that games are the center and that’s the star of the show, that’s what people buy the console for."

Personally, there are two things I think are cool about it. First, this is the best looking online virual world out there. As you can see by the video, it is heads and shoulders above There or Second Life for looks.

The second cool thing is something I have been asking for for a few years now: The ability to form groups in social game space, and move as a group to another online game. Hanging with a group of friends and sick of talking? Launch a golf game, and suddenly you are all playing a round.

This is one of two key ways to solve the "content problem" with social games. In the real world, people don’t just sit around and yak, they go do stuff and yak. PS3 games will act like a virtual holodeck, each game a different environment to tackle as a group, then back into Home and chat some more.

The second way to fix the "content problem" is player created content. This I see as the big negative of PS3 Home. From what I can tell the only thing you will be able to customize is your wall pictures, and what songs play on your virtual in game stereo (just load your songs onto your PS3 and they play). But clothing, furniture for your virtual house, wall and floor textures etc will be limited to what Sony provides. In this respect, PS3 Home has more in common with The Sims Online.

There are no doubt other negatives. The game does not come out till fall, and even then you will have to spend $600 to get a PS3 in order to play. I’m not entirely sure how playing with a game console controller will work either.

Just think, if you get a PS3, you may meet one of these girls there.

Pizza Time!

March 9th, 2007

So someone built a Cosa Nostra Pizza in SL. It is the pizza place in the book Snow Crash which was a major influence on the building of SL in the first place. The term “Metaverse” comes from the same book.

So wouldn’t it be cool if you could order a real pizza in Second Life and have it delivered to your first life door?

Well Dominoes is working on just that! Coming soon, you can IM Dominoes in Second Life and get a pizza delivered to your door in first life.

New Second Life Page with some new discoveries

March 5th, 2007

So I was updating my website and created a new news aggregator for Second Life blogs. The address is http://www.virtualunderworld.net/secondlife/

Basically it automatically downloads news from 9 of the top sources for the last two weeks. It makes a good source for what is going on in game and also some great suggestions of new places to visit.

I already used it to find Movie Tickets Island http://slurl.com/secondlife/movietickets/128/80/28/ where you can watch trailers and actually buy tickets.

Or even more cool is Galveston Island http://slurl.com/secondlife/Galveston%20Isle/128/128/0 sponsored by the Galveston Tourism Board with realistic buildings. Maybe other cities ought to consider this.

So use the aggregator to find cool new places.
